Fast Rope Action by ThomChen114 Fast Rope Action by ThomChen114
This is one of those rare moments where out of nowhere i become so inspired and this happens. I wish i knew what it was exactly then that inspired this, or what i saw at that moment that gave me the for this.

I've been stuck in a rut the past few weeks, trying to come up with something more dynamic. And what's more dynamic than fast-roping from the roof skylight, guns blazing?

Inked with unipins and copics sketch markers.

LOL! The enemies have been taken by surprised!

The art looks like a comic book cover! Are you making a comic book right now?

How have I not seen this, this is sick!  Super action packed and yes, dynamic.  The angles are awesome, the shattered glass is awesome, the rappel lines are awesome, everything is awesome.

"Everything is awesome! Everything is cool if you're part of a team! Everything is awesome....."

Sorry, the Lego Movie has ruined me whenever i see or hear the word 'awesome' uttered more than once XD

Thanks, i was worried that i might get something wrong, since i didn't have a lot of reference on hand, especially when it comes to a scene like this. just glad i pulled this off well enough :)

Inspiration, "Combating artist block; and kicking in the window coming through the top floor while doing so!"  Excellent work!

Haha yeah since i couldn't actually kick in some window to relieve stress (mostly since i didn't want to have to be the one to clean up after), i just had to draw a scene of windows being smashed in, with style! :D

Damn, that is some pretty neat work. Love the poses, the angle and above all, the detail you put into this. It also has a good comic page feel with that black-white contrast. I really like it :D

thanks, the poses where not easy to do since i had to make sure it didn't end up looking wonky or unnatural. and that comic page feel was exactly what i was going for :D

Hehe, looks like we're all looking forward to draw something more dynamic, got some mini doodles scattered around my book for future ideas but never really got the time nor motivation to do them.
That's a well executed piece here, loving the shattered glass and motion lines around those SF boys. =P

Dude, you're really starting to produce some great stuff. Don't be afraid to deviate in uniform design. Even though it's probably more realistic to show identical uniforms, the visual language of your style could benefit from being fleshed out with diversity. Control over value and shading is stellar. Don't be afraid to photo reference some bits of gear (I'm talkin' boots) and consider lightening up the line weight on figures in the background. The compound perspective really sells this one as dynamic and action-packed - which is hard to do without looking wonky. Keep up the good work.

Thanks so much, i truly appreciate your comments on this. They help me grow and become better as an artist.

It's true that i should diversify the uniforms a bit, but i intentionally didn't show their faces so i wouldn't have to give them character. And for this it made sense to make their uniforms identical, this isn't GI Joe :D

Boots huh? I'm still working on that, since there are so many kinds of boots military soldiers an operators wear, that i just went with a general look most of the time. I do use photo reference when i need to, but most of the time i can pull off winging it since i can draw most of the gear a typical trooper would have.

I have a tendency to really draw heavily, one which i have been trying to control and rectify. Or use different pin sizes.

I'm glad i managed to pull this off. There was so much that could have gone wrong while doing this.

I know this is a late reply, but I know what you mean by not wanting to do the character of each soldier. Instead, (something I do) you could make slight adjustments like in the Battlefield series. But this is such an AMAZING action scene. The glass fragments make the picture.

This piece is truly fantastic! You've captured such motion and detail in one frame, and all of your hard work shows. I can't wait to see more of your drawings, especially these random blips of creativity. Fantastic job!

Also, could this be your inspiration? (3:09-3:27)

Thanks, this was really fun and challenging to do since i had to make the poses look believable, and the glass was actually done on as an afterthought. I'm just glad i managed to pull this off...

No, but they are pretty similar, the only difference is that the Ghosts fire their weapons after they land (possible since the baddies were stunned), whereas these operators are firing as they go down, which means they'd be coming in from a very high ceiling to be able to do so...

Well, I definitely think the glass added a lot to the drawing as a whole. Fantastic job!
